# Making Sense of Data: Statistics, Patterns, and Evidence

InnovateUS workshop · 21 January 2027 · 60 minutes · upcoming: registration on the workshop page

You don't need to be a statistician to work effectively with data, but you do need to understand what the numbers can and cannot tell you. Learn how to interpret common statistics, percentages, rates, comparisons, charts, and trends using public sector examples.

Practice using AI to help analyze data, identify patterns, and create visualizations. Learn how to check the results and recognize common problems, including inappropriate comparisons, poor-quality or biased data, confusion between correlation and causation, misleading visualizations, and AI-generated analyses that appear convincing but are not supported by the evidence.

**Tool and opportunity:** Use AI to support analysis, identify patterns, and visualize data.
**Risk and responsibility:** Check the data, methods, and AI-assisted analysis before accepting the results or drawing conclusions.

Part of the series [Data Literacy for Public Service:Understanding and Using Data in the AI Age](https://innovate-us.org/workshop-series/data-literacy-for-public-service-understanding-and-using-data-in-the-ai-age).
