AI Basics for Public Sector Legal Professionals

This foundational session introduces public sector attorneys and legal staff to artificial intelligence technologies relevant to government legal practice. Participants will explore how AI systems work, common applications in legal settings, and the considerations relevant for government lawyers. The session demystifies AI terminology, explores AI use cases, and outlines AI risk and policy considerations. Through practical examples and interactive discussion, attendees will gain the baseline knowledge needed to explore possibilities for AI adoption in their organizations.

  1. Understand core AI concepts, terminology, and how different AI systems (including generative AI, machine learning, and natural language processing) function in legal contexts

  2. Articulate current use cases for using AI applications in public sector legal work, including document review, legal research, and case management

  3. Identify fundamental challenges and risks associated with generative AI including privacy, bias, and hallucinations, and explore the related policy considerations
