InnovateUS partners with Minnesota IT Services to provide no-cost training on Artificial Intelligence
InnovateUS partnered with Minnesota IT Services (MNIT) to provide no-cost, self-paced
training programs for state employees on artificial intelligence (AI). This collaboration supports
the state’s efforts to integrate AI technologies responsibly into government operations,
enhancing efficiency and accessibility in public services.
State of Minnesota employees have access to two InnovateUS courses on responsible AI use,
Using Generative AI at Work and Scaling AI and Your Organization. These courses are
available on the state’s Learning Management System (LMS).
“Artificial intelligence has incredibly transformative potential, and we are working across state
agencies to incorporate it responsibly in our day-to-day work,” said Ted Goessling, Minnesota’s
Director of Artificial Intelligence. “Through training and educating our workforce, we are
furthering our goal of enhancing government efficiency and reducing bias and inequity in our
service delivery.”
In 2023, the state enacted the Public Artificial Intelligence Services Security Standard, which
guides the responsible use of public Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies and services by
State of Minnesota employees. Developed by the Transparent Artificial Intelligence Governance
Alliance (TAIGA), the standard provides recommendations on the use of AI to improve personal
productivity and efficiency while providing best practices to prevent the release of private,
sensitive, or protected data. This training aligns with the values established in the standard, with
content dedicated to the best practices of AI, the ethical implications of its usage, mitigating the
risks presented by the technology, and more.
InnovateUS provides self-paced learnings on data, digital, innovation, and AI skills for public
service professionals. InnovateUS is supported by philanthropy, this partnership comes at no
cost to the State of Minnesota.
"At InnovateUS we believe that in order to tackle today's most challenging public problems and
build a more responsive, efficient, and transparent government, we must train our workforce on
how to responsibly use AI," said Beth Simone Noveck, Founder of InnovateUS and Director of
the Burnes Center for Social Change and the GovLab. "We are thrilled to further expand our
work to Minnesota and are grateful for their leadership in empowering their workforce with the
skills and tools to improve people's lives.”
Over 200 Minnesota state employees have begun the courses. To learn more, visit the
