Recognizing the potential for emerging technologies to improve service delivery to Ohioans, the
DeWine-Husted Administration is embracing the potential of AI while balancing the need for
responsible, secure, and unbiased development and procurement of AI solutions. To support these
endeavors, the state partnered with InnovateUS to launch a new training opportunity within its Ohio
Learn environment for all State of Ohio employees and contractors, titled Responsible AI for Public
Professionals: Using Generative AI at Work.
The state took a unique approach to the training, creating a custom module that highlights critical
elements from the state’s AI policy and governance framework. In addition, the state established two
secure generative AI training environments which allow everyone who takes the course to complete
multiple hands-on exercises. Overall, this is an eight-part course aimed at teaching the benefits and
risks of generative AI, as well as appropriate use practices.
While the state has established a strong governance framework through the publication of Ohio
Administrative Policy IT-17 Use of AI in State of Ohio Solutions, the policy’s associated
implementation toolkit, and the establishment of the AI Council, training opportunities like this are
critical to increasing awareness and understanding.
The State of Ohio looks forward to a continued partnership with InnovateUS aimed at measuring the
success and effectiveness of this training, as well as exploring new training opportunities. The state
will share monthly high-level participation information and survey responses to assist InnovateUS in
assessing the training’s impact on government services.
Many agencies are already invested in leveraging generative AI solutions to improve operations and it
is anticipated that this training will further promote AI literacy and adoption. Enabling the responsible
integration of AI represents endless opportunities for the state and the individuals and businesses it
serves.
