New self‑paced course equips state employees to meet Alabama’s AI governance standards of human oversight, privacy & cybersecurity, transparency, and accountable use
MONTGOMERY, AL – April 8, 2026
Seeing the growing opportunity for modern technologies to improve public services, Alabama is expanding the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) across executive‑branch agencies. Today, the State of Alabama announces a partnership with InnovateUS to deliver a self‑paced Responsible AI training course for state employees. The program will help support the State’s safe, secure, and effective adoption of AI while strengthening public trust.
This launch further operationalizes Alabama’s AI governance framework – embedding human oversight, privacy and cybersecurity protections, content provenance, and clear disclosure of AI use into everyday practice. The training is aligned with the State’s Artificial Intelligence Governance Policy, the Alabama Generative AI Acceptable Use Policy, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) AI Risk Management Framework (Govern, Map, Measure, Manage).
“Alabama is committed to adopting AI in ways that earn and maintain the public’s trust. Our partnership with InnovateUS and the training resources they provide will give our government workforce the tools necessary to use AI responsibly while protecting sensitive information,” said Daniel Urquhart, Secretary of Information Technology and Chief Information Officer for the State of Alabama.
What the training covers
Employees will learn practical, policy-aligned practices for responsible AI, including:
-
Human oversight and verification before using, publishing, or disseminating AI‑derived content
-
Protection of sensitive and restricted data when querying AI systems or training proprietary models
-
Disclosure and authorization of planned AI use on State information networks
-
End‑to‑end guardrails for planning, procurement, security, privacy, governance, and risk management of AI solutions
Alabama’s AI policies establish a clear expectation that state agencies must ensure personnel involved in the development, deployment, and use of AI receive training. The policies also encourage a culture of awareness around AI security risks and ethical responsibilities. The InnovateUS program will help to reinforce each of these objectives.
“The InnovateUS course offers Alabama state agencies a centralized, practical pathway to help meet the State’s AI governance expectations, ensuring that responsible use, human oversight, and public trust are built into everyday practice,” said Beth Simone Noveck, InnovateUS Director. “We are proud to partner with the State of Alabama to make this vision a reality.”
