Putting Public and Democratic AI into Practice
This closing session looks at concrete examples of how public institutions have used, built, or bought AI in ways that keep meaningful control in public hands. Participants will examine the choices that made these efforts work, what they required in money, skill, and political support, and the points where they ran into trouble or fell short. The emphasis is on how a given approach succeeded under particular conditions and what a public servant working under different constraints can reasonably take away. By the end, participants will be able to recognize where the openings for public and democratic AI exist in their own institutions and what it would take to act on them.
