AI in Public Health

About the Series

This workshop series will introduce public health leaders and practitioners to artificial intelligence and one of the most important and underdeveloped opportunities to transform the health and well-being of our communities.

While AI is rapidly transforming clinical care, its application in public health remains early, fragmented, and full of untapped potential.

Designed for public health professionals at all levels—policymakers, frontline practitioners, and supervisors—this series helps participants both understand AI and begin applying it in their work.

These sessions will demystify AI, surface high-impact use cases, and equip participants with a practical understanding of how AI can strengthen population health systems. We will discuss approaches for centering human and community voice when implementing and evaluating AI systems. The goal is not just awareness but activation: helping public health professionals see what’s possible and where to begin.

By the end of the series, participants will be able to:

  • Explain core AI concepts in accessible terms and connect them to established public health methods, building a foundation for informed decision-making, responsible implementation, and staff education within their agencies.
  • Counter health misinformation in an AI-accelerated information environment, using emerging tools and communication strategies to shift from passive information delivery to active, trusted, and personalized public engagement.
  • Apply AI to expand benefits access and simplify enrollment for eligible populations. This includes using intelligent assistants, automated form completion, and cross-system coordination while safeguarding privacy, ensuring equitable access, and maintaining program integrity.
  • Navigate the structural and institutional barriers that have slowed AI adoption in public health — including fragmented data systems, risk aversion, and complex governance environments — while centering human and community agency at every stage.
