New training supports the Office's Strategic Priority to modernize operations,
strengthen service delivery, and ensure staff meet updated 2026 continuing
education requirements
InnovateUS today announced a new partnership with the Maryland Office of the Attorney General (OAG), marking one of the first collaborations between the learning platform and a state attorney general's office. The OAG is requiring all employees to complete AI training beginning in 2026, positioning the Office among a growing number of state attorney general offices working to formally integrate AI education into continuing education requirements.
OAG leadership says the training initiative advances the Office's Strategic Priority to modernize operations, streamline internal processes, and strengthen service delivery. By pairing AI education with updated continuing education requirements, the Office is embedding responsible technology use into its professional standards framework.
The Office will deploy InnovateUS's Responsible AI for Public Sector Legal Professionals course series and has updated its 2026 Continuing Education policy to include at least one hour of AI-focused instruction for all staff.
“As artificial intelligence rapidly changes the legal environment, our Office has a responsibility to ensure our attorneys and professional staff have both the skills and the ethical understanding of how to use these tools to best serve Marylanders,” said Attorney General Anthony G. Brown. “This training will help every member of our team use AI responsibly, serve our clients in State government more effectively, and strengthen our work protecting Marylanders.”
Addressing AI's Impact on Legal Practice
Generative AI tools are rapidly being adopted across the legal profession, raising new questions about accuracy, confidentiality, bias, and professional responsibility. Maryland's AI strategy and policy aim to ensure government attorneys are equipped to evaluate and use these tools ethically and in alignment with emerging guidance from the American Bar Association.
The InnovateUS course series includes:
- Using Generative AI: Everyday Tools and Best Practices
- Designing AI Policy, Projects, and Societal Impact
The training focuses on practical application in public-sector legal work, including human oversight requirements, risk identification, and safeguarding confidential information.
The curriculum is consistent with guidance from the American Bar Association, including the ABA's ethics guidance on lawyers' use of generative AI tools.
"Public sector lawyers are on the front lines of ensuring the government uses technology responsibly while protecting rights, privacy, and the public interest," said Beth Simone Noveck, Founder of InnovateUS and Director of the Burnes Center for Social Change and the Governance Lab at Northeastern University. "Role-specific AI education is essential to maintaining professional standards in this moment of rapid technological change."
