Generative AI for Public Sector Communicators: Tools, Ethics, and Best Practices
Led by: John Wihbey
This workshop introduces public sector communication professionals to a range of generative AI tools, with a focus on their capabilities, limitations, and real-world applications. Participants will explore how these tools can be thoughtfully integrated into public communication workflows while upholding standards of quality, transparency, and ethics. The session will offer practical guidance on choosing the right tools, developing safeguards, and adapting workflows to take advantage of emerging capabilities. Together, we’ll explore two guiding questions: Which AI tools and features are most useful in public communications work, and what skills do professionals need to use them ethically and effectively?
- Understand the capabilities and limitations of leading large language models (LLMs) and generative AI tools in the context of public sector communications
- Compare commercial AI models and evaluate how they can support ethical, effective workflows and content strategies in public-facing work
- Apply generative AI tools to core challenges in public communications and assess methods to improve strategy, efficiency, and engagement
