Using AI in Public Sector Legal Practice

About the Series

Public sector legal work depends on careful analysis, sound judgment, confidentiality, accountability, and public trust. AI tools are creating new opportunities to support legal research, drafting, document review, policy analysis, procurement, compliance, and public guidance. At the same time, they raise important questions about accuracy, professional responsibility, transparency, confidentiality, and the appropriate role of human judgment in legal decision-making.

Building on the earlier AI for Public Sector Legal Professionals series and complementing the at-your-own-pace course Responsible AI for Public Sector Legal Professionals, this three-part series focuses on practical uses of AI in government legal practice.

Participants will explore how public-sector legal professionals are using AI today, examine emerging ethical and professional considerations, and learn how to evaluate and implement AI tools responsibly within their organizations.

Designed for public sector attorneys, legal staff, policy counsel, and government professionals who advise agencies on legal, regulatory, procurement, compliance, and governance matters, the series emphasizes practical lessons, real-world examples, and responsible adoption.

By the end of this series, participants will be able to:

  • Identify appropriate uses of AI across a range of public-sector legal uses.
  • Evaluate AI-generated legal outputs for accuracy, reliability, confidentiality risks, and fitness for purpose.
  • Apply ethical and professional responsibility principles to the use of AI in government legal practice.
  • Assess legal AI products and emerging tools for potential adoption.
  • Develop practical safeguards, policies, and review processes to support responsible use.
