Explaining Public Service: Strategies for Clear, Credible Communication

Led by: Jill Abramson & Max Stier

Communicating what government does—and why it matters—is essential to building public trust. In this conversation, Max Stier, President and CEO of the Partnership for Public Service, joins moderator Jill Abramson to discuss practical strategies for explaining the work of public servants with clarity, nuance, and credibility. They will explore lessons from federal innovation, public-sector leadership, and media storytelling to help participants communicate more effectively about government’s role, responsibilities, and impact.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe key principles for communicating government work accurately and effectively.

  2. Apply strategies for explaining public-service roles and contributions in ways that resonate with diverse audiences.

  3. Use narrative techniques that increase transparency, foster public understanding, and strengthen trust in government institutions.
